Alex has been upholstering since the late eighties, and graduated in upholstery from the Sir John Cass Department of the former London College of Furniture in the early nineties.
During the following 17 years working as a qualified professional upholsterer Alex has developed his own upholstery techniques routed in tradition, but with a thoroughly modern/sustainable outlook for the future. From developing new pieces to commission, interpreting an old frame and updating it or restoring an old master with the care and consideration required, Alex has the skills to match and is happy to consider a variety of projects.
Alex has been lead tutor in the Advanced Upholstery Section of London Metropolitan University since 2003 where he has developed a program to meet the changing needs of the creative side of the industry and move away from the out moded “Ministry of works” school of thinking.
Several of his former students are now pushing the craft forward and creating a Designer/Maker roles for upholsterers who traditionally have not been encouraged to take up this role.
Alex is currently developing a range of high craft products using a mixture of natural and recycled materials. |
